This coin is raw and I'm seriously considering sending it in to get graded. I know it's a gamble, but the coin is stunning an almost flawless in hand.
I don't know if it will grade MS67, but I don't specialize in Washies either. The difference in value between MS66 and MS67 is huge! At MS66, it's not really worth grading. Chris
I'm with Chris on this one as it will never grade 67 , just too much noise , (small hits) all over . Maybe 65 if the luster is all there . Hope I'm wrong and it's just the enlarged pics , but I don't think I am .
Great looking coin! Easy 65, maybe a 66, but most likely not a 67. I would just put it in an airtite and enjoy. TC
That's one for a Dansco set. I can't tell how the luster looks from the pictures, but my gut is telling me 64. Spend the grading fees on an album.
PCGS is super tough on these. I've sent in coins almost exactly like this one and they come back 64 and 65 without fail.
No! The spots all over the eagle, the enormous milling mark on the eagle's wing and the chatter all over the portrait are telling me that MS65 is the max for this coin. Regardless, it has been my experience that with late date, business strike silver WQs that PCGS is loathe to give out the MS67 grade unless the coin has nice toning, too.
I wish I could hand this coin to you with a 10x loupe and examine it. Most of what you see as flaws are actual flaws on the die transferred to the coin. The coin has luster like you can only imagine. No photo can capture that. The dark spots on the reverse are not very noticeable with the high contrast produced from the luster. I really think it could 66, 66+ with a slight chance at 67. To me it will be worth the gamble. I already have it in an airtite. I have examined it over with a 40x loupe and there are no varieties with this one. It's just a very well struck example. Thank you for your opinions, I do appreciate them. When I do send it in, I'll update as to what the TPG's have to say.
Assuming the luster is there, and assuming there are no hidden problems in the fields, this one tops out at 65. There is absolutely zero chance that this will get 67. With the marks on the cheek and eagle, I would seriously doubt this gets anywhere near 66. Honestly, its closer to 64 than 66.
Maybe he should advertise it on eBay as the "Wounded Eagle" variety then (a pun on the Sacagawea variety that commands a decent premium)...
