I stumbled across this coin the other day in a box of "junk" coins and thought at first glance that it was an 1883. When I took a closer look I noticed what appears to be the bar of a two over the three. I know that there is an 1883/2 for this series, but I looked up the coin on PCGS coinfacts and it looks different. I'm somewhat puzzled, any insight would be helpful.
Agreed not an over date. The over date is an 1883/2 not 2 over 3. It is an repunched date later die state. As well the coin is corroded and your image is very bury. However you can see the primary 2 over a secondary 2. Due to the corrosion and wear maybe a 15-20 value.
When the 2's wore on these they started to resemble a 3, no real reason and no idea why it didn't happen in other series.
Thanks for the info, I'll take a look online for repunched dates and see if I can find anything to match it to.
And the later die states become the filled 2. Which if not careful some sellers call the 83/2 variety.
It does happen on the others series, but since there is no 83/2 in those other series no one pays any attention to it.
