I'm more interested in opinions of how this would grade using the prevailing, mainstream numismatic grading standards of today than any one service per se. I will post a full holder shot at the end.
I'm reconsidering my grade. AU-55 It's hard to see the surface of the coin. I think the shoulder of the buffalo is worn and the indians hair looks a little smooth. Like I said, the photo is really making it difficult. So AU-55.. I know it's quite a step down from my previous estimate. But I'm thinking its actually the coin and not the pictures.
If that is not AU (I don't think so), 62 or possibly 63 at most. Too much luster missing to grade higher.
Well, the horn and 'mound' displays very little wear---the usual high spots--- so I'll go with Ms-63...but I'm sure there is more luster than your photo reveals.....the obverse looks like you are trying to 'downgrade' the actual look, although the feathers do look a bit soft....so a push up to 64 at most.
Me too, that's an uneven strike. The hair ribbon looks too good. Oh, MS63 and up, bad strike on that one, particularly in the center. If I'm wrong, AU55.
So there obviously is no right or wrong answer here. I will be submitting this to PCGS soon to see what they say. My thoughts in hand are that the coin has a weak strike and not wear, and I was thinking more along the lines of MS62, shot MS63.
Between the marks, luster, and strike, there is enough holding this coin back to limit the grade to 63. But, I think 63 is the right grade for it.
I am trying not to get my hopes up too high given that grading can be unpredictable and both TPGs appear to be in a conservative period at the moment. I hope you all are right. If you are, this would be a super rip. IIRC, I paid high XF, low AU money for it, and would be happy with anything in the higher AU to lower MS range.
Well if your sending it now expect AU Details without the 1914/3. They are in a very tight period right now it seems. Good luck with the dice roll though.
Thanks everyone. I am definitely sending it in the plastic with a minimum grade. If nothing else, SEGS is looked upon favorably when it comes to attributions, so if I ever sold it, I think it would be more liquid in a SEGS holder than raw in this very limited case.
very hard to tell the 4/3 but since it is suppose to be, then it is worth the money to get it slab by another company and if the grade comes out better than that is good for you. I had a 4/3 before and it was graded by Anac and it graded MS 61. So it long time ago for $2200. to a private collector. This coin is still pretty new to alot of the collector who doesn't know it is out there to be found.
