Time runs faster every day. for my 2000th. post i want to show one of my bucket list coins. 2134 years old, give or take a year or two, Roman Republic Janus Denarius.
please feel free to post your Janus or Roman Republic coins..

    M Fourius L F Philus
    Roman Republic 119 BC.
    Ar Denarius..
Obv. laereate head of Janus..' M FOVRI F' around.
Rev. Roma standing left erecting trophy, gallic arms right.
    PHLI in ex.
    19mm x 3.84g.
I bought this as a reg. denarius, but i think it may be a fourree'.
threre's some copper showing on the edge, under magnification. still love the coin and i do collect fourree coins.
For those reading this a fourree' is a plated coin to fool or cut down on the amount of silver used, much debate on these coins.

Being 3.84g, I doubt it's a fouree. Could be just regular copper leaching out. Its a nice coin though and congrats on 2000.

I dont own the type but want to eventually.

Congratulation John. Nice coin to celebrate with. I love the type. Mine is actually slightly lighter than yours and I do not believe it to be a fouree.

    Hi John,
    very nice coin you have.

there is always some copper in it and copper can "leak" out , as my other coinfriends i do not think its a fouree.

I only have a janiform type of Pompey---so I'll post my two newest Roman Republic denarii instead; one a budget example and another of a higher grade. My intent to acquire several of different reverses and not just chariots...

I love the RR serrated denarius Chris!! I have that fouree type I posted a bit back.

Another one I don't think I posted before is:

    C.Egnatius CN. F.CN N. Axsumus 75BC
Winged bust of cupid, bow and quiver over shoulder
Distyle temple, within which Jupiter and Libertas facing; control to left
3.83 gm, 18 mm--(from the Mr Hunt Collection?)

By the way, will denarii of Caesar and Octavian and Anthony count?? The Republic hadn't fallen until Caesar entered Rome and eventually defeated Pompey and then all the rest after his assassination.....??

I see no signs of it being fourree. Having deposits in a fissure will look like this.

    Congrats again on your milestone!!

    Congratulations on 2K, Eng!

I have only one janiform coin, an Imperatorial era bronze in which the Janus figure has features of Pompey the Great:

SEXTUS POMPEIUS MAGNUS, son of Pompey the Great
    Circa 43-36 BC, Sicilian mint?

    AE, 29 mm, 19.8 gm

Rev: Prow of galley right; [PIVS above, IMP below]
    Ref: Sydenham 1044?

Here's one of my favorite Roman Republicans :)

Obv: Helmeted head of Mars left; CAESAR; ・J above
Rev: Venus Genetrix in chariot left, drawn by two Cupids; lyre to left; ・J above (or is that a retrograde C or L? Many of these have retrograde letters.)

Oddly, I think that my favourite RR is this cute "voting scene"

    P. Nerva AR Denarius
    113-112 BC
    Rome mint
    Diameter: 17 mm
    Weight: 3.86 grams
Obverse: Helmeted bust of Roma left, holding shield and spear; crescent above, mark of value before
Reverse: Three citizens voting on comitium: one voter receives ballot from attendant below, another voter places ballot in cista; P on tablet above bar

    p nerva.jpg

... plus, I haven't seen too many examples of it (that's always a sweet sign, eh?)
