What, if any, prep do you do before you send a coin in to have it slabbed? I know it depends on if it is a proof or circulated but what is the furthest you'd go to get a better grade?

Well, I've never sent one in. But other than proper packaging - absolutely nothing.

Hey Speedy, does that offer apply to everyone? I normally send off my coins with a dealer to NGC. Is there some way for me to do it myself, and save money?

You can join NGC as a member & directly submit coins to them for grading, or as a member of ANA you are also able to get a submission number to send coins into NGC. PCGS also has a collectors club you can join to be able to directly submit your coins. Whether this will save you money or not depends on what sort of deal you have with the dealer you have been using. You do have to pay for any of these memberships, and there is a grading fee for each coin submitted.;)

alrighty---I'll let you in on something I found not too long ago.
When filling out the Forms you have to either fill them out ONLINE or you have to write them out by hand---when writing them out ONLINE it also sends a note to NGC--I don't think this will speed up on how fast you get your coins back---and it also gives you 10% OFF your total cost. My grading and shipping fee was coming out around $100----but because of that it was around $80. Now I think that is worth the time to fill out the online form.

I was told that when you fill out the forms online that the info is not sent to NGC. When the coins arrive there, they still enter the info by hand. That was a couple of years ago so it might have changed since then.

I'll ask NGC next time I call to make sure I understand it right----I know that this time my coins got into the NGC sys. faster than last time. The coins got to NGC on the 26th and the next day they were into the sys, whereas sometimes it could have been a handful of days before they would pull them out of the box from the safe.
I guess I should have put in my post that what I said was what I had heard and what it has seemed to me....as NGC didn't tell me that in person...just other people....but I'll try to remember and ask NGC for sure.
