What is going to be THE coin/set to own this year. Every year one coin or set seems to take off wildly in price and makes everyone who bought it very happy. Which one will it be from this year?

Why not use the hype to buy what you like. If I can make enough money selling off coins I don't want to get the 1/4 oz. Buffalo gold coin I really want, wouldn't it be foolish not to do that?

Everything silver. Eventually, maybe not this year, even silver eagles will probably command a significant premium above bullion value. Sometimes the best buy is right under your nose.

For the past 5 years or so that was true, at least most of the time. Before that however it was hardly ever true - ever ! So what do ya do if nothing takes off ?

So your guess is, nothing??? LOL Hadn't considered it, but maybe I should be ready for it. I just hope the only thing to happen this year isn't the washington with the blank edge.

With all the difficulty the Mint has had with the pres. dollar, the proof set offerings all have some potential of being available in smaller numbers. Late releases always have that chance. But I don't think anything like the three coin ASE set. There has got to be a goof up or two in the proof sets to look for as well. When you're working frantically to get the sets released, the odds of a mistake are high.
I have heard the advice time and time again to not invest in modern stuff. I've financed many a new addition to my collection by speculating in modern issues. I came out ok on the 04 Westward Journey set and almost as good with the ASE.
I'm rambling here, but in the end it all boils down to what you like first of all, what you're comfortable about buying and what you can afford.

I like platinum to go up. Too bad I can't afford it.

Not at all, I'm not even making a guess. I'm just trying to point out that because of all the new folks buying stuff from the mint that a false sense has been created that "something" is going to go up on the secondary market. This is just not true - it never was. But in the past few years people have made it be true with all the talk and all the hype.

So heads up gang - cause it aint gonna last forever.

I agree with you but I still think the Jefferson Spouse coin will be under minted and with suprising demand because of its classic design.

It does have a nice design, but what makes you think it will be under-minted?

I think the dollar series is already proving to be a huge flop and the mint will be trying to cut make as few as possible, but the demand for this particular coin, the first time seen since the 18th century, will be strong.

I agree with this too. That's why I'm cashing in on my '99 silver proof set. I just don't see that remaining at it's current level with the state quarter program coming to a close next year. I have never been able to find a rational explanation for the level it's at in the first place.

As far as what to buy, I'm sticking with what I like...A.S.E.

    Love you folks,

I too have noted that in the past there seems to each year be one item that gets ignored, underminted, or over-demanded and goes up substantially in price. - 97 silver proofs, 99 silver quarters, 01 proof sacs, 04 mint sets, marine dollars, lewis & clark pouch sets, all the 20th anniversary stuff, etc.

What will do it this year? Geez, that's pretty impossible to call off the top. I like the thought that the silver proof set will work, I also like the thought of the pres dollar proof sets, I like the thought of the Mrs. Jeff gold coin. And of course, anything that comes out late and weird.

They're showing 2007 unc silver and gold eagles. Anyone know if this is true?

In all honesty, you bet your money, you take your choice. Would that we could all afford 10 of everything. Alas and alack, not I.

What I do believe strongly is that the bull market in precious metals has only just begun and that gold, silver and platinum prices will continue to rise and substantially.

This points me toward the silver proof sets, pres dollar proof sets, and anything weird or very late in the year as perhaps places to buy some extra for speculation. Otherwise, as usual I'll be buying as many of the different products that I can afford and trying to always buy an extra or two.

    peace,

    rono
