I will be the first to admit that Lincoln cent are not a strong point in my collection .as well as not knowing anything about cent minted after 1981. I ran across two Lincolns one is an 2003 D where the D looks to be a repunched D. see image. The next is an 2006 P where Lincolns Lapel hole looks as it is doubled as well there looks to be another to the right of the primary one. Since these coins are copper coated and the coating is in place and no signs of break through. What's your take on these two coins? Please see their images below.
The design of the 1990 forward coins for Denver and San Francisco the mint marks were part of the design of the coin. (Not punched on the dies after 1989) So it is impossible to be a RPM. The locations of the mint marks are all the same on coins that year. So it might be die deterioration/coin contact/machine damage to this device/or a doubled die. It is not a doubled die, so it may be one of the first two suggestions.
Im not experienced enough to make a suggestion but if I came across those myself I would agree and thought the same as you Paddy. I tend to have a "pop that aside and do more research" pile which I go back to and thats where I would have popped those. Of course.then I would come on here and ask you guys n gal's. [emoji38]
Like @coop said, the mintmark was incorporated into the die in the 90's. I'm just not sure of the exact year. Chris
