image.jpg Hello everyone I'm in need of your opinions yet again. I just won this coin on eBay. I believe this coin to be at least image.jpg AU. I would really appreciate everyone's opinion on the grade. The photos aren't the best but it does appear that this coin has a bit of luster .

You may be right but I really hope your wrong. At least on the cleaned part. The seller has a no question refund policy worse case. I looked these photos over good before bidding and I can't see any trace of a cleaning.

Good luck, hopefully it is just poor lighting.

I'd say the pics aren't clear enough to say for sure about a cleaning , but I agree with coinman about some wear . Does it cartwheel when you tilt the coin . If the luster is their it really wouldn't matter much unless there was hairlines visible with a 5X loupe . With those pics since it's a common date , I wouldn't pay too much for it .What is he asking ?

I bought the coin on eBay earlier today . There wasn't any grade that it was listed as. I thought it was AU 55 or so . I won it for about 20 bucks so I don't have a lot in it. Still yet I don't want to pay that for a cleaned coin. I didn't see anything from the photos that made me think it was cleaned. Like you said untill I get it under a loop I can't be sure.

$20 isn't bad at all , even if dipped .

Will the TPG,s grade a coin that's been dipped ? Main reason I bought this coin is I'm trying to come up with a fifth coin for anacs 5 coin minimum . I posted a pic a few days ago of another dime but about half the people that posted said it has a 50/50 chance of getting a details grade due to environmental damage. So I got this one and if it's cleaned I'm still going to need a fifth coin. I have a few ngc AU detail barbers and none of them have any luster at all as with most coins I see that are cleaned . Thats one of the reasons I thought this coin would be ok. I may be wrong though.

My thoughts were AU too. I am not sure if the surfaces are market acceptable.

I agree with the consensus: based on those pics, AU cleaned. You may get lucky and the pics are bad, but the coin is great.

To answer your question, TPGs will grade coins that have been dipped, provided the color is not unnatural. This is not generally a problem with silver, but can cause issues with copper.

As long as all the luster hasn't been burned off, yes... a dipped coin is both gradeable, and is a very common practice.

As for buying to submit, I usually view it as a fool's errand for a new collector unless it is done for the learning experience only. With that said, even with an easy return policy, it is best to ask about a coin you're interested in and unsure about before you purchase. If worried about drawing attention to it, simply find someone who's eye you trust and ask them to takea look via PM.

Agreed 100% with @BooksB4Coins. Dipping is fine as long as the color is natural and the luster isn't badly impaired.

When I said details, I meant the surfaces looked off.

I appreciate the post guys. I guess I will have to wait and see. It's really dissipointing that I can't catch a break. Hopefully it's just the photo. I just can't see it though. Here's a photo of one of my details coins. To me image.jpg this coin looks off way more than the one in question.

Sorry to say but I'm in the Au cleaned camp also. I hope I'm wrong. As the first thing that came to mind was cleaned when I saw the rev. Then I thought a clash...but after studying the image I'm thinking cleaned.

I saw the other photos from the auction. I'd say you should be ok. It looks like the back may have decent luster. I think the lighting and WB is just way bad.

The seller had several barber dimes listed as an old timers collection. I feel a lot better about the coin since you said that. I also thought it was ok since about half the other coins had better photos and they looked all original. Like you said the coin seems to have a decent amount of luster therefore it never cross my mind it had been cleaned. After posting here and the majority saying it was cleaned really disappointed me. Soon as it arrives I will get some better photos and then see what everyone thinks. Hopefully the few of us that believe it's ok are right.

I like to post images of new coins. But I always try to post my photos unless the original photos were pretty good. Here's an example of something I picked up.

image.jpg Wow that looks like two different coins. Really nice coin. I'd be showing that beauty off as well. I went back and looked at a few of the other coins on my watch list from that same seller.. The lighting or something seems way off with some of the photos. I got a Good example .. image.jpg

The reverse on the 1900 dime looks cleaned in the center field. Compare the center to that more natural strip of luster to the right outside the wreath. It's hard to see harsh cleaning though from the pics, so it might pass with a clean grade if it was lightly cleaned. I have an xf45 clean graded barber that has light cleaning, ie it doesn't have extensive hairlines and the abrasion isn't so deep. If it turns out in hand that it looks like it would not grade clean, I'd still be happy with it and put it in a capital holder. That's what I've done with a similar coin. A lot of noncollectors have praised its beauty, like I do when I stare at it. As for wear, I think it's most evident of the hair just above the forehead. It's not extensive but it's apparent, so it's probably a Au 53 or 55 depending on luster and such
