You have two feedback in the last year. No coins sold in your history. So your claim of selling a 100K in coins on Ebay was false?
I never said I sold the 100k in the past year... Look at my prior feedback....Feedback as seller... I don't know how much more clear it can get.
.... You obviously are not looking at the link I sent you. Scroll through my feedback... Its at the bottom. Pg 2 has over 20k of sales. I can't teach you how to use eBay. This has nothing to do with my thread so if you aren't going to help, then stop trolling me.
That is the thing, Ebay is risky, dealing with the post office is very risky, but the alternative is selling to a dealer who buy wholesale. I found though the best place to sell in person is at a coin show. There are many looking to buy coins and will give you the best rate. I sold some junk silver and the best rate I was given was the coin show. Another option is list them here. I have sold coins here and it was much less of a risk.
IMHO....Best LCS in DFW for your collection is C R Coins in NRH. Google their web site. Fair pricing and lots of years experience with large lots of coins. Ask for Rob.
I actually stumbled upon them yesterday. They definitely look to be one of the very few legit coin stores in the DFW area. Thanks.
I sent him my first list of coins to see what he would value them at. He gave me pretty good values. However, two of the sets are very rare so I am hanging on to them. I gave him a second list with cheaper coins (30 coins, ~$5k) and he said I will pass. I scared him away!
Here are three options all of which I have done: (1) Sell to LCS and get your money the quickest, but you will lose more on the sell since they have to make a profit. If I had a current grey sheet I can almost tell you what my local shop will give for a coin. (2) Consign to a dealer. You can get good returns and will pay a 5 - 10% fee for selling the coins. Depends on which dealer you work with. The problem is you have to wait for the coins to sell. So it could be quiet a while in some cases. I have used 2 - 900fine and Rick Snow. (3) Work with an auction house. You know when you will get your money, but it will still take time. Depending on what and how much you might be able to get it down to 5% commission. I used Heritage and did real good on the coins that went on platinum night, but the common low grade stuff went on Sunday/Tuesday auctions they did not do real well. For the platinum night coins I lost roughly the 5% commission - remember I paid retail for a lot of these coins from dealers. Those that went on Tuesday sunday only about 2k of coins I lost about 10% if I recall correctly. Those were my results and just what I experienced.
http://www.900fine.com/ for 900fine or you can just PM him from this site. Not sure when Rick was on last. You can contact Rick Snow here http://www.indiancent.com/ - I have only used him for IHC's, but I do see other stuff on his site from time to time.
PS - there are probably others who can recommend sellers who accept specific type coins for. For example I if had a nice Large Cent for sale I would consign it to tom deck - but never had the opportunity for using him. Not sure of the details on it. I sold a lot of silver eagles and stuff with Rick - did pretty good on those.
I generally agree with these points, but keep in mind that your LCS/dealer will have a network of buyer connections that you don't have access to. While they will still be making money on your coin, it's not necessarily extra money you could have gotten yourself. The more specialized your material is, the more true this point is. For common material, you may do better on your own, but don't think that you can't get your best price from a dealer or LCS. Sometimes you can.
Very true. I know some of my coins went out that way. Interesting thing is some of my graded large cents went on ebay the same day I sold them to them. I knew what they paid and what they got - in most cases it was reasonable and about what I expected for retail. Now what is really funny is the that at least 3 of them went back on ebay a second time by those that bought them - all of them were listed again at almost double the purchase price. I watched two of them until they were no longer listed on ebay. So I never knew what the second buy got.
These "rare sets" are the ones that make up the bulk of the profit. I would guess that most dealers would be willing to take on the cheaper stuff (uncirculated sets, basic silver eagles) where they won't make a lot of profit if they also get the "good stuff." Which goes to support what I wrote above. If you want to cherry pick your own collection, then I would suspect you're going to have to put up with a lower offer on the rest of the collection. The very things you are dreading (taking inventory, building a catalog, selling cheaper items) are the same things that are going to turn off most dealers. I saw one large collection on Craigslist last year and by the time I had worked up the nerve to contact the guy it was gone. It went for about $0.25 on the dollar, but it was gone quickly.
These sound like eBay coins to me. Heritage will not touch these unless you have a rare high grade coin in the Morgan pile. And even then, the mint and proof sets will be sent away. Minimum consignment value is $5k.
Precisely, which leads me to eBay consignment or selling to a local shop IF they will even consider them. I am coming to the conclusion that I need to just forget about the value of coins and consign with someone who delivers results. 20-25% off the top line might be worth getting this weight off my shoulders.
