The problem JA is that he said he pulled the trigger even though I suggested he wait till others chimed in with their opinions. This is another case of patience being a virtue many of us lack, self included.
Ah. I missed that part. Well, I'm not one to point fingers. I've made a handful of collecting decisions that I now consider mistakes.
Haven't we all. But you make a good point. I believe it would be wise for any and all of us (except the most learned) to post asking for advice when we have concerns
John your right !! I once long time ago bought a Tyre shekel from a French guy, so nice coin, I have sent it to a expert for a report, because they told me it was a fake..but report came too late so no refund and only costs, funny, 250 eur and 50 usd costs, that is how it goes...too good to be true...
I'm sorry to hear that! But as they say, once burned, twice shy. Shy is not a bad approach when it comes to collecting expensive coins.
Sincere thanks to everyone for their contributions. It probably is a fake, but too late for me to stop the shipment. Since he has a 14 day return, I will return it. I have to think and see how to make a complaint to pay-pal. I just really don't know anything much about ancients (not even exactly where to look, but I am learning) so when I saw it, I thought I would get it. I had made up my mind that if it were a valuable coin and I sold it, I would split the money with the person who sold it to me. Oh well, back to the hunt.
I would tell you that going to the collecting of Ancients with the thought of finding something worth 20 times what you pay is not likely. Way too many savvy collectors and way too many scoundrels.
I agree, that's why, even though I am new to this area, I asked before doing anything. I know I went ahead and bought, but only after making sure there was a return privilege. If I had not bought and found out it was genuine and worth more money, I would want to kick my own posterior. Particularly thanks for the links that can help me search by myself.
Always ask when you are unsure. As I said, I would have thought long and hard about buying that coin as well. But if you are like me, be careful. A little knowledge can be dangerous. Best to wait on the heavy weights to respond.
OK, if anyone sees this, I sent the seller two e-mails saying first that I thought he had listed the coin before as a replica and in the second that I had seen his previous listing as a replica. He shipped anyway and now I get an e-mail saying it was his first time listing it and that he will respect a 10 day return. Should I complain more or just ship it back? I've never returned something on e-bay. Recommendations.
I have found ebay is pretty good at handling complaints. They will make sure he gives you your money back if he wants to remain an ebay seller.
Don't return it on your own. Instead open a dispute with ebay and escalate immediately (you can also do this by calling ebay's 1800 number). Ebay will send you a return slip, and you will need to print it out and return the article with that shipping slip. If you don't have those sticky paper then ask ebay to send you a UPS shipping slip instead of USPS, so you can print it out at UPS store. This way Ebay will refund you upon delivery of that parcel, and you wouldn't need to deal with the seller.
Great, this is what I was looking for. I started to just return it to him, but then thought how easy it would be for him to claim he never received it or that it was not the same as he sent. I will look on e-bay and call the number. Thanks.
Power is with the Buyer in these cases - You will be getting a refund - it will take a few weeks Be sure to send it back insured with Signature confirmation just in case if it was real you would have scored big time. It does happen by the way...but ya gotta be vigilant - use every source on the net - Even a basic google image search can bare results to help id a coin - Vcoins - wildwinds - forum ancients - Cngcoins - As well as any books at hand
OK, I told e-bay I wanted to return the coin and they sent me an e-mail that had a link to a mailing label. The label says "No Postage Necessary If Mailed In The United States". Is this customary? Does e-bay pay for my postage???
the email should contain a mailing label. print it, stick it onto a padded envelop and mail the coin with that. That label is the stamp, Ebay basically pays for your return postage with that. if you don't have all the stuff to make this package on your own, you can go to a UPS store and have them do it. You can email the mailing label to them (after calling your local UPS store to find out their email address of course). In this case I think UPS store will charge you a buck or two to make the package. In either case, you can track the package. Inform Ebay once the package had been delivered, then ebay will refund you. This procedure might change once Paypal was split from Ebay. For the time being, Ebay basically refunds you preemptively then get their cost from the seller.
To finish this out, e-bay sent a mailing label and I got my money back. BTW, the seller has listed two more "replica" coins he goes to great lengths to make sure everyone knows are replicas.
