I hate to mention another site but I am not computer savy. I followed a link at collectors universe where you can vote for the Hawaii quarter. Has anyone here voted? I think the hula girl has a good chance.

I voted for the design that has the King Kamehameha I statue & the map of the islands.

I voted #4 although 4 and 5 are practically identical.
I like the background on 3 a lot but I went with 4 because I like the idea of using the Hawaiian language on the coin (not that I speak it).

Catbox_9,one of the King Kamehameha I statue designs actually has a scene of Diamond Head in the background. The other one has a map of the islands instead.

I too like the idea of having the Hawaiian language on the coin,as it will be the first time that an American coin has an inscription from a native language that isn't someone's name. That is,if it is the design selected by the Hawaiian State Governor.

I was under the impression that the designs with the king statue on them were not going to be used. Somewhere I read that a king would not be depicted on a US coin. Is there any truth to this?

I personally like the one with the king and diamond head.

They changed their minds!!! Kings have no place on the coinage of a republic!

Hang on here,it is only the statue of King Kamehameha I that is being depicted. If it hadn't been for him, there wouldn't have been a Hawaii.I think that depicting the statue on a coin commemorating Hawaii is extremely appropriate.

One of our first commemorative coins featured Queen Isabella of Spain, so it's not like depicting a monarch on a US coin would be unprecendented. (And as Aidan pointed out, technically the coin isn't depicting a king; it's depicting a statue of a king. I don't think anyone would object to depicting the king that united the Hawaiian Islands, without which there wouldn't be the state of Hawaii. As for legal matters, you can put pretty much anything you want on a coin if Congress approves. There's no standing law I know of that forbids depicting monarchs on US coins, and even if there was, Congress could pass a one-time exception if they chose.)

I like #3. I think it's getting rediculous with how many states put the state outline on their quarter, as if they couldn't think of anything unique about their state besides what it looks like on a map. Diamond Head and Kamehameha are both much more signficant aspects of Hawaii than what their map looks like. Would be a great way to end the series.

I never said I had a problem with it...there was a lot of talk several months ago that all the Hawaii designs were not acceptible (and this was one of the reasons) so the mint was going to design Hawaii's quarter. Then, suddenly there were having this poll. But, I guess they changed their mind.

As far as depicting a king vs. a statue of the king...its pretty much the same thing. ;)

    I like that ! I like it a LOT.

I've been reading a lot about Russian history and the end of their kingly line (the tsars)... a great way to understand what Thomas Paine was talking about in Common Sense.

For some reason, when I was a kid, coin collecting made me more patriotic. I guess it was all that history about the early days of the Mint, and of the Republic.

Richie, the Hawaiian State Quarter has to depict something that represents what Hawaii is.When people think of Hawaii, they think of Honolulu, whose most famous landmark is the Iolani Palace. What is outside the Palace? The statue of King Kamehameha I,who was the famous Warrior King of Hawaii.

Amen to bqcoins. I thank the American service men and women who protect us while we sleep. But back to the Hawaii quarter, I think the hula girl quarter is the best looking quarter since the 1916. I must admit that it probably will not make it because of political correctness.

I say the Arizona should be on the coin. I have been there, spent some time there. I have never NEVER felt so somber and proud as I was standing over that sunken ship. It used to be when somebody spoke of Hawaii my first thought was Hula Girls. Now its Pearl Harbor, although.... the Hula Girls are awesome. I didn't see the King while I was there to be honest. There was really no mention of it in any of the tourist rags that I had gotten. Now when you talk to the Hawaiins about heritage, they speak of The North Shore. Surfing Surfing Surfing. The females speak of David Hasselhof ( I didnt know that the black firebird (KIT) could surf), the males of Pamela. I will be going back in a few months, I will check out the King Statue at that time. GO ARIZONA

Being from Oahu myself, I liked number 3. With King Kamehameha and Diamond head it captures Hawaii. A close 2nd was Kam and the Islands #4 I believe.

Jim,putting the wreck of the USS Arizona on a coin is just too gruesome,I'm afraid.

I tried thinking of what the proof versions would look like, and to me it was a tie between the hula girl (of course) and the surfer. The hula girl will probably make it, but the king has a good chance unfortunatly, because he has like 3 out of 5 designs, but I personally liked the hula girl and the surfer. So, I voted for the underdog, lol, and chose the surfer. Personally to me the background is a little to plain IMHO for the hula girl. But that is just me. My two cents.
