I have a very nice Roman coin, unfortunately though, its nice dark patina chips away a tiny bit whenever it is handed or when its holder is moved. Its not noticeable yet but I worry this will change. I could simply store it away and never look and handle it again but its an ancient coin, where's the fun in that? I am thinking a coating of Renwax or an equivalent might keep its patina together? Does anyone have any other suggestion? Thank you.
The problem is in the interface between the underside of the patina and the metal. I don't believe wax would do anything to help, as it would go on the topside of the patina. I have a few coins like this, and I've resigned myself to keeping them permanently in 2x2 flips. Non-PVC flips are very stiff, and they hold their coins quite tightly. I simply don't handle those. I don't know what else to do but accept the fact that they are delicate, and should not be handled.
I figured the wax would seal the patina together, but Ive never waxed any coin before so I wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong. I think I might go the cardboard 2x2 route instead, after I snap photos of it.
If the patina is extremely fragile you might also end up damaging it further when rubbing the Renwax over the surface.
that was my first though as well. i have waxed coins with a patina that seemed weak, but not flaking off at every touch or movement. what is the coin vk, just out of curiosity. do you have an old picture of it? if any moving of the flip damages it think i would consider...gasp ...something like a slab. or like a capsule or something. please don't pelt me with rocks.
