It's possible that I might be able to get this coin at an affordable price, if I'm convinced it's Didius Julianus. I looked all over and could not find a similar reverse for Septimius Severus. Dealer says this is a Sestertius, more than likely, CORCORDIA MILIT reverse. I would like some help with the ID and thank you. I know some of you guys are really knowledgeable for this era.
Here is a higher grade example that looks close to this coin. Didius Julianus. AD 193. Æ Sestertius 29mm, 22.40 g,. Rome mint. Laureate head right / Concordia standing left, holding signum in each hand. RIC IV 14; Banti 1.
I say it's Commodus - look at the angle of his head, Commodus usually has his head leaning slightly back - Commodus droopy eye looking skyward. - The reverse standards at a V angle vs. the other more vertical - the damage a Possible damnatio memoriae - intentionally damaged cause they did not like Commodus
I've already passed on it because it could be either Commodus or Didius Julianus. I've seen coins that looked similar in bust styles. I'm not 100% convinced.
That's the real issue. If you're looking to add another emperor that you don't have, do you want a coin of uncertain attribution? Do you want to say, "I might have Didius Julianus?"
Yep, I've decided I ain't getting it. But it would have been nice to get a Didius Julianus for a decent price. Oh well.
