As a born again Coin Collecting Newbie (I use to collect Wheaties when they were in circulation) I have run across the terms: 1979 Type 1 and Type 2, sometimes with an S and sometimes without. I have also seen this term applied to the whole 1979 year set. Could somebody please clue me in as to what exactly I am looking for to fil this slot in my album. TIA
Welcome to the forum Tia. "S" refers to a San Francisco mint mark. According to the Red Book, most of the 1979 proof cents minted at San Francisco had a "filled" mintmark, which means that instead of a sharply delineated "S", there is more of a blob. As a result those with a "clear S" are listed in my 2003 Edition at $50, while the more common ones are listed at $2. There were 3,667,175 proofs minted that year, but the Red Book does not give a breakdown of the types. (Denver issued over 4.1-billion cents that year, and Philadelphia produced more than 6-billion.)
Thanks satootoko! I guess I probably should buy the latest Red Book so I won't have to ask too many dumb questions. Are there any other Lincoln Cent reference books I should get for my library? Oh yes, by-the-way TIA is short for Thanks In Advance . I don't have a "signature" yet but I'll probably go by Exiled. Thanks again.
I like this site for my coin facts. Here's the link for the 1979-S Lincoln: http://www.coinfacts.com/small_cents/lincoln_cents/memorial_cents/1979s_cent.htm
Howdy Exiled - Welcome to the Forum !! I see you're in Nevada - makes us neighbors There are many books on cents, the list is near endless. But you can find a great deal of info here LINK
Howdy Ed Zak and GDJMSP. Thanks for the links. I have not run across them before. It looks like Yahoo has let me down. I have two books coming on Lincoln Cents and two on the "Mercury" Dime. I have only 1 dime so far and a number of Wheats. I hope to get my Dad's collection from my brother somtime soon and that will increase my collections. Thanks again.
