I have obtained a brand new, mint, uncirculated stack of 100 $5 ($500) Star notes series 2013 in sequential order sub-200k serial numbers beginning with ML still in the BEP strap from work. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas or input on this and what it may be worth to.a.collector. Thanks!
From a print run of 3,200,000. Looks like the packs are selling in the mid $800 range on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-Five-Dollar-Star-Note-Pack-2013-Mint-fresh-BEP-banded-uncirculated-pack-/111374788189?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19ee74665d&nma=true&si=n2SiqMAI6W1d4esIveP6Wx214mY%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 The wording in the eBay description almost sounds like it's YOU selling them.
Thanks for the info! Haha, no not me. I haven't even looked at eBay yet. Ebay is famous for ridiculous things at ridiculous prices. I also noticed that stack has higher serial numbers.
Unless they are star notes or they come back 69pq or better, it's not worth the cost of getting them graded. Most modern notes have the ability to be 68+. Since the difference between a 68, 69 and 70 is nearly imperceptible, it's not worth the gamble.
All 100 bills are star notes, below 196,000 serials in sequential order, and are crisp. Cut looks pretty good Imo as well.
I missed the star note part. On second thought you'll probably need 69 or better to make any money. Think of it as a $12-$15 fee per note to grade it. That makes it cost you $17-$20 per note. For 100 of them, you'll need $1,700 to $2,000 to break even. I would still advise against it, because I don't think there's a market out there for it, unless you hit a streak of 69 which is unlikely.
High numbered stacks are selling for over $800 ungraded on ebay. Wouldn't the grading even if it was a 67 ppq fetch more than the $20 per note? I'm fairly new to note collecting, I've mainly stuck with coins til recently, so please see excuse my ignorance lol.
If it was a scarce issue, it might be worth it. But there are two factors working against you: 1- there aren't many collectors interested interested in modern notes, and 2- most people can still go to a bank and pick up a strap for themselves at face value.
Maybe $20+ per note if you parted them out. But don't forget 13% fees for eBay and PayPal. Plus all the time spent trying to do that. I'd think you can make the same profit raw in less time.
I'm a year late but I agree with funkee, selling the strap raw is the best way. If you can cherrypick a couple with fancy serials it may be worth grading them, but then you'd have to sell the rest individually, or as a partial stack. You likely have a range of [ML0019xx01* - ML0019xy00*]. It depends what xx is that would determine if you might have 1 or 2 that could be worth more than any of the others. if xx=90 than ML00199100* would be the last in your stack and known as a RadaR/Birthyear. if xx=00 than ML00190019* would be the ninetenth in your stack and known as a Repeater. Good luck and happy hunting.
