I have seen quite a few 1866 Shield nickels. Can't say I've ever seen a 1866 with the date cut like this one. Most 66 shields have the smaller first 6 and larger second 6. But those are smooth cut numbers. Looking at this date it almost looks like a caveman cut it in a rock. Edges are very rough no real smooth lines. The one image of the Gules close up shows a very shaky hand slip engraving the lines.
The denticals are tripled around the edge.

With the sloppy engraving on this one should we assume that this may not be genuine?

No - because the copper nickel composition was very hard and the dies wore out quickly. If you look at enough of them you will see where around the letters and numbers die chips start falling off leaving roughness just like this. I do not think this is poor engraving, but rather die chips developing on the two 6's. And with the re-cutting that went on it might have made the die chips occur quicker.

    Very nice Paddy.

I still think that column almost looks like a strike thru - not a missed placed date.

Never said anything about an mpd on this coin Mark. I think it's an engraving issue.

I think I might have confused it with another you posted on the other site. :) I searched all of them at the local shop - nothing interesting.

Thanks Loopy, No need to call me Mr. Paddy works just fine, but do admire your respect. These are fun coins to collect and budget wise they are pretty cheap. To be honest if these were made of silver silver alloy ,I believe they be right up there with CBH's. As collectors would eat these up. Thanks for your comment.

They are lovely and most definitely on my list (eventually).
Some coins just feel good in the hand. For me I like the buffalo nickel due to the size and weight. Weird.but thats me.
