Dear All, One of my new coins, a very strange & rare Alexandria Troas coin. Gallienus, this is a ancient brockage coin. I thought lets share it with you all.
I have none even though I have tried on several occasions only to be outbid. But, really, if I think about it, I'm not sure why I want one.
Ahhh, yes. That must be it. All joking aside, I see coins posted here all the time that peek my interest and eventually one ends up on my payroll. I'm not sure it's "keeping up" so much as "yep, that's one I want" syndrome.
oh cool, excellent brockage coin cyrrhus, the details on the "messed up" end are pretty dang good. brockage coin is on my list.
Is it just me, or do Brockage coins seem to be more prevalent in silver? A bronze is definitely a sight to behold.
Brockages are much more common in silver and downright rare in large coins. I have rather few and try not to get any that don't show the incuse details most clearly. I feel the need to have a few to illustrate the 'species' but not to own one for every type that exists. The most common are probably the Republicans. Who can show a sestertius? Read the legend This Claudius dupondius is my largest but I think it might not count since it is barbarous. When they started using pincher dies, reverse brockages became possible. This is COMES AVG but which of the Gallic rulers was on the obverse. When a brockage is produced a regular obverse is pushed into the blank/ To me it makes sense that that coin would be damaged. Might the Septimius below have been the coin that stuck in the die and was obverse flattened when it produced a brockage? The reverse might be normal or even better struck since it got a second blow while stuck. I'll never be able to prove it but I like the theory.
Was anyone here the lucky winner of this Pompey brockage? It was auctioned today in Brussels. I bid live several times but gave up due to stiff competition. It's a stunning example and I regret not pushing harder, although who knows how high the winner would have gone...
