Based on an earlier thread "I Really Hate This" here are a couple of new items that have surfaced. Possibly die polishing error and doubled die. There are also Trail Dies being found. Just goes to show what happens with a bit of patience. Not my finds.
If you are referring to the top of the hair, yes, that looks like a die chip. I can also see a die crack at the forehead. Die chips can often be seen along with a die chip, though not always, it depends upon the stage of the deterioration of the actual die. Trail dies are completely different. They usually show as "trailing' away from a device, metal flow that extends out and away from, lets say, the grass at Abe's feet on the reverse of the 2009 Woodchopper coin. I have also found some trailing at the bushes at the right side reverse of the Illinois capitol building 2009 coin. Trail dies can also be found under the word "Liberty" on the 2009P Woodchopper coin. They are minor errors but still fun to collect.
Thanks for the feedback. I've seen many of these die chips and die cracks (it looks like a blood vein on Lincoln's forehead) on the 2015's. I guess they are common.
That was a nice find by the way. I have not found any large die chips in the hair on these yet. There is a vein tho next to the hairline but further back from where I see the crack.
Hmmmm, really? You think it's a good find? So now you have me thinking. I'm sitting here looking at ten of them right in front of me. All with that die chip at the top of his hair, die crack on his forehead and plus in his hair line. I've been finding them (the past week) in new uncirculated rolls. I wonder if they all came from the some die?
Well, there are some folks here who will have nothing to do with minor errors, but I find them fascinating. I've also been badgered for selling them in groups. But I have a few customers on the bay that love them and do the flea market circuits. I do not advertise them as being "rare" or "very valuable", etc. But they are also good tools for coin clubs to study die deterioration. As far as being from the same die, it's hard to tell because so many dies are used when producing billions of these coins each year. That's where the studying comes in on these.
Thanks but being retired I go through thousands of coins each month. I usually sell them on the bay to buy other coins I do need. But I'm also working on a full box of 2015 right now so I'm bound to run into one eventually. But your offer is very much appreciated.
Okay, not a problem. I'll put your name on it if you change your mind. No charge of course, since I have ten of them. I also see a lot of these out there. See you on campus.
Dang but you are doing well my friend. Hang onto them, especially if you are finding them in B.U. I've not seen the late stage die crack yet from the shield to the rim. Lot's of the others along the top left edge of the shield I have found.
