So, my son and I are thumbing through 6 rolls of pennies we picked up for a night of father son searching/bonding...and what does he find??? A wheaty??? nope a 1906 Indian Head in circulation still! LOL I was siked and he was thrilled. That one find made a collector out of him for life. He gets thrilled when he finds a wheat, the indian head was like him hittng the lottery. LOL Just had to share the experience with all of you =)
Tell him Congrats !! :thumb: Yeah they're still out there, so are Frankies, Walkers, SLQ's, Barber's - you'll even get a Morgan in a roll now n then. Ya just have to keep searching, but it happens.
You would probably find one in a roll of Ike dollars, if you were VERY lucky....Not living in the USA, I'm not sure where you would find rolls of Ikes etc...
Great find for you two...hundred year old Indian Head! Wow, a hundred year old coin in circulation. The oldest coin I've ever found in circ was a 1916 Wheat cent and that was back in the mid 1980s in Canada!
Nice find that is for sure. And there are many reasons people still find such coins in change. Some people that used to collect coins in a jar, can, box, etc just take them to a bank and presto, back in circulation. Also, most crooks that steal a coin collection just spen the coins as coins. Then there is the few people that just get tired of collecting and start using some of their coins for spending. Myself, I've been dumping lots and lots of Kennedy Halves for tips at restaurants. I recently dumped hundreds of dollars worth of those stupid Bicentennial Quarters into a bank. As to the large Ike Dollars I just saw a pile of them at a flea market for $1.5 each. At many banks in the area I've had tellers tell me they get them on occations but they are put aside for people that have put their names on a list for them. One teller I know said nuts to those lists, her relatives get them all.
Or......... There are those who toss an Indian or Buffalo or Mercury into circulation every once in a while.
Now that's the way to do it! And Lady Luck couldn't have picked a better time and place to cooperate.
Dude, I think that's great. Yep, that's how many of us got started. I got a Merc 10c at a garage sale in the mid 60's; the rest is history !
