I am trying to organize my byzantine coins, but I have doubt about two coins from Komnenos dynasty. When I bought these two coins they were described as Manuel l, but the seller stated that he was not completely sure. I have taken a look on Komnenos coins to identify the two coins, and I feel that the first coin nr 1 is Isaac ll Angelos based on what I have observed from other coins from the same dynasty. Coin nr 2 is certainly not a Manuel l, because when I look at other coins minted during his reign, he is always (or almost always?) behind a man who lifts his hand to bless him. – I think that coin number 2 have to be Alexius lll Angelus. Is coin nr 1 Isaac ll Angelos, and nr 2 Alexius lll Angelos? Can anyone confirm what emperor they are below?
I really like 'Byzantine' coins, but I have always had extreme difficulty attributing raw unidentified types...so unfortunately I am no help.... But A-noob or one of the others may help clarify things for you.
i think you may be correct on the first as well, look at sb 2002 here at wildwinds... http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/byz/isaac_II/t.html
My guess would be Issac II. Check out Doug's posted here... https://www.cointalk.com/threads/an...of-last-minute-additions.257234/#post-2048384
So coin 1 likely have to be Isaac II Angelos (1185–1195) And coin 2 is very likely Alexios III Angelos (1195–1203) That is how I will organize them, and this is first and last time for me to purchase uncertain coins. It will not be repeated. Thanks.
I was tempted to "like" this post. I am glad you got your coins attributed, but if you rule out buying authentic coins of uncertain, then you will miss out on coins that can satiate desires both subtle and gross. What if I told you most of my collection consists of coins that are rather uncertain.
Well, we all have our purpose regarding collecting coins My only purpose is 30-35 Roman/Byzantines coins from the era of Constantine until the last dynasty, and then 1 solidus and 1 tremissis. – And I would most likely keep it with me until I die of old age. But no, I don’t share a fascination of coins that is massively “damaged” and difficult to attribute.
Well, unless they have really cool animals on 'em, right Herberto? ahaha, Herberto ... man, I laughed out loud when I read that quote!! Noob => on the bright-side, this dude is never gonna snipe your auction targets!! (cheers) You two dudes should hit the coin shows together => two wing-men who'll never snipe each other's coins!! (priceless)
I don't like damage. Maybe then I can suggest adding a Byzantine silver piece just for completeness. I am eager to see how well you stick to your list, some do really well others like me do not.
