Nice upgrade Bing! Galerius is one of those Emperors of whose coins I have several examples of. But only one Follis. Galerius; AD 297-298 Bronze; AE Follis, Heraclea mint; 29mm/9.2g OBV: GAL VAL MAXIMIANUSNOB CEAS; Laureate Head R REV: GENIO POPULI ROMANI; Genus standing Left holding patera and cornucopia (RIC VI 20 b, G)
I've actually been trying to get a nummus from each mint during the first tetrarchy. No one's shown a Rome mint coin of Galerius, so here's mine. It's an uneven strike, but it's got most of its silvering Galerius Reigned as Caesar AD 293-305 Reigned as Augustus AD 305-311 Coin Struck AD 302-303 Silvered AE 1 Follis Rome Mint RIC VI Rome 104b O: MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES, laureate bust right R: SACRA MON VRB AVGG ET CAESS NN, Moneta standing left holding scales & cornucopiae, star in field, R Q in exergue I've also just realized that I never kept up with scanning my collection, and I don't have any other good nummi pictures right now, but I can see if I can get some pictures tonight or tomorrow.
We all like those big folles but I'll just be different and show a Galerius from the short time he was Caesar before the coinage reform that ended the antoninianus and brought us the large follis and post reform radiate. It is not that these are rare but there will be a hundred of the big boys and another hundred post reform radiates offered for sale for each of these pre reform coins for Galerius. Since Lugdunum did not use the XXI, how do we know this is pre reform? Buy RIC volume V part 2 and look up #678. Compare to this one from acsearch: http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1630084 This seller had a really nice one and was only asking 350 euros correctly identified. Is the coin worth 350 euros? Not to me. Now look at this one from a different seller: http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1897202 They did not look up the coin but copied the ID from somewhere adding the bit about it being in RIC volume VI. The Lugdunum section of volume VI only has 312 listings so 678 is impossible. The coin is in volume V. I will point out that they only got 5 UK pounds for the coin (a reasonable price for a post reform radiate). When you buy coins from auction houses, beware to whom you pay a buyer's premium. Just having a fancy website does not make you an expert. Still, I paid more for mine so maybe I should shop there??? Similarly, a pre reform Constantius I. This one has the XXI which makes it easier to spot as an antoninianus. Thank you, Antioch.
I've gotten some more pictures, so here's an example from each original tetrarch. This is a Galerius from Trier that I rather like: Galerius as Caesar Reigned as Caesar 293-305 Trier Mint O: MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES, laureate bust right R: GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI, Genius naked with chlamys over left shoulder, holding patera and cornucopiae, B in left field, gamma in right, TR mintmark in exergue RIC VI Trier 213b No one has posted a coin from Alexandria yet, so here's one of Maximian: Maximianus reigned 286-305 coin stuck 300 O: IMP CMA MAXIMIANVS PF AVG, laureate bust right R: GENIO POPV-L-I ROMANI, Genius naked, chlamys over left shoulder holding patera from which liquid flows, cornucopiae, XXI in left field, B in right. RIC VI Alexandria 30b Another mint no one has posted in this thread is Aquileia. I rather like the style of the bust on example of Diocletian: Diocletian Reigned 284-305 O: IMP DIOCLETIANVS PF AVG, Laureate bust right R: SACRA MONET AVGG ET CAESS NOSTR, Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae, AQS mintmark RIC VI Aquileia 29a Finally, this coin isn't the best struck, but it was struck on a bizarrely large and weirdly shaped flan. A lot of other collectors probably would have passed it up, and it didn't sell for much (I believe it was under $15), but I like coins with something unique about them, even if they have flaws. I'm quite pleased to have this. Constantius I as Caesar Reigned as Caesar 293-305 O: CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES, laureate head right R: SALVIS AVGG ET CAESS FEL. KART, Carthago standing looking left with fruits in both hands
