I just looked on Ebay and the only ones I found in the $250 and under range are not in very good condition. Several in better condition were at the $400-$500 range.
I decided to compare my old siliqua with recent Heritage sales and found that many 'nice' examples of various Emperors sold in about VF for about $200.00 and my Honorius, but offered in a slightly higher grade ( my F+ compared to GVF)---hit about $300...presumably mine with the Roma seated reverse has a value of about $200 or so.. A few nice 'general' examples are reasonably priced, if the scarcer types JA refers to are out of ones budget.
I happen to like the votive types, even on bronzes. I have quite a few of them. If you really want to understand their significance, you've got to research when the votum of a particular coin was performed, where, what was going on in the history of the empire at the time, etc. There is as much to learn from these coins as any.
Sometimes a bit boring, yes, but a nicely preserved siliqua is very enjoyable : Constantius II, Siliqua struck in Sirmium D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG, Diademed bust of Constantius right VOTIS / XXX / MVLTIS / XXXX, in a wreath. SIRM at exergue. 2.07 gr Ref : Cohen #342, RC #3997 .....and should you ever get bored with them, you always can turn your eyes to miliarense Constantius II, Light miliarense, Ferrando II plate coin Arles mint (Arelate), 3d officina DN CONSTAN TIVS PF AVG, Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius right VIRTVS EXERCITVS, Constantius (soldier) facing holding spear and shield. TCON at exergue 4,54 gr ; 22,6 mm Ref : RIC VII # 252, Ferrando II # 1026 (this coin), Cohen #326, RC #3993v Q
Variety makes any coin type less boring...and the differing reverses you posted makes your siliqua examples quite appealing to me 'Cucumber'...but, unfortunately, a bit too pricey for me to fit in my budget as a 'series'
Well I did not expect to see this kind of activity here. Many thanks to all who posted. Wow! You guys are throwing some big numbers around here ( $250 , $400), I am only paying around $180 for this Siliqua. Lucky me.
Good on ya. I suppose if I found one as nice as yours for that kind of price, I might just try to get it. On the otherhand, I can buy some fairly nice coins for that $200. Hmmmm.....
Indeed that would seem to be the case AN. I think the gods do not favor us . That is a very nice miliarense, Cucumbor!
I'm always happy to see your silquae parade and hope you remain exclusively focused on the type. Totally self-serving... it means one less person competing for coins I'm chasing, although as others have opined I wouldn't mind picking up an example or two.
I'm sorry to have started this what seems like negative posting on siliquae but the question was raised on why there were so few follow up posts on the subject and I pointed out that most of us have few appropriate follow up coins. I have something like five siliquae and have shown all on previous Magnus posts. Similarly, I have come not to expect to see many follow up posts to some of my specialties unless it happens that another of our regulars here shares that particular obsession. That does not mean there shold not be more posts of the type but only that you should not feel surprised when there are few if any follow ups.
I understand Doug, but I still like the idea of starting my own coin forum with beer and hookers though Siliqua FTW!!!
I rather like siliquae, but it's pretty rare for any to come down into my price range. Luckily, I have a high tolerance for damaged coins, and I've managed to get two examples of siliquae of Julian II, both of the same type: Julian II "The Apostate" AD 361-363 AR Siliqua Constantia (Arles) mint RIC 297 O: DN IVLIANVS PF AVG, pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right R: VOTIS V MVLTIS X in wreath, TCON in exergue These aren't ideal examples, but I'll take what I can get. I also find it interesting how stylistically different these two are despite both being the same RIC type as far as I can tell.
All the siliquae you've shown are nice, this one is no exception. I'd like one of these too, just to have an example, the same way I'd like to have a Tetrarchic argenteus, but that will be even more painful on the wallet.
Yeah the four tetrarchs a sacrificin' is the type I'd like to have. And actually, make it a Diocletian too. Hmmm....
Not a Siliquae, but rather an Argenteus MAXIMIANUS AR Argenteus OBVERSE: MAXIMIANVS AVG, laureate head right REVERSE: VIRTVS MILITVM, four tetrarchs sacrificing before walls with 6 turrets Struck at Ticinum, 295 AD 2.6g, 18mm RIC VI 18b
M.M., I only have a few siliqua in my collection. This one is my favorite. Also nice coins everyone. Doug H.
