I have a Compass 'the Judge 1 automatic.' Takes eight AA batteries. Bought it second hand in the early 70's. Cheap money for hours of fun. Still works good - last fall I found a pocket knife my brother had lost several years ago. He thought that was cool but rust had gotten the better of it.

I am glad I Tried this. The obv. fair'd well. and the d is visible. Still not a fan of trying to doctor the coin. 52'd cleaned obv.jpg 52'D cleaned rev.jpg

How long did you dip it?

Years ago I was hunting an old school yard and got a strong signal under a large bush. I had to lay down and reach under it to dig. I found a wheat cent and checked the hole again. Still had a good signal so I dug some more. I did this over and over again. Before I was done I had a handful of wheat cents. I guess I found some kids little stash. This taught me to always check the hole again before covering it up.
That was a really fun day. A few days later I found an 09 VDB along a path in the playground. I need to go back there someday.

I dipped it twice for about 3-5 min. The thing I read later is that acetone dosnt remove organics. I believe that's what is left. Its on there pretty good.

The one thing I liked about this place. I only found two zinc pennies.

Other way around. It does remove organics.

That's good to know. According to a post on another thread, Xylene removes organic compounds. Don't know if that is true but it might be worth a shot.

I'm jealous of all of the guys I follow on instagram who are in Europe. They pull medieval coins out of the ground every day.
