See the listing for 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter... I'd love to get one of these for the prices posted!!!
Sorry, I'm at work and don't have the book with me, but I believe it was only $9 in Good!!! All the prices in the line were below that of the 1917 Type I. I'll try to post a pic tonight. I was figuring people with the book would look for themselves...
What a shame to get such a key date misprinted. I'll wait for the revised version. "2.0 and 15lbs lighter!"
Prices in the Red Book are notoriously off, so does this even matter? If I were to buy the book, it would be for the updated content, not the prices.
It does to some extent. I haven't memorized the market value in every grade for every key date. If someone offers me a 1916 SLQ in VG, is it $1500 or $4000?
@carboni7e , I understand. I just don't use the Red Book for prices, because they were determined around a year ago so the book could be published. I understand the prices for some series don't fluctuate that much, but for me, when I'm looking to spend >$300 for any coin, I look to the recent auction results for updated pricing.
If anyone is curious........ G-4: $9 VG-8: $10 F-12: $22 VF-20: $40 EF-40: $70 AU-50: $120 MS-60: $240 MS-63: $435 2008 Red Book G-4: $3,200 VG-8: $5,500 F-12: $9,000 VF-20: $11,000 EF-40: $12,500 AU-50: $14,000 MS-60: $16,000 MS-63: $20,000 Did somebody recently find a couple of bank bags of these?
And that's why I don't bother with buying the new Red Book every year, books, after when the ink is still drying, are out of date.
Yes, looks like that is exactly what they did. 2015 Red Book values for 1916 SLQ: G-4: 2600 VG-8: 5500 F-12: 6750 VF-20: 8750 EF-40: 10000 AU-50: 11500 MS-60: 15000 MS-63:17500
I don't think the prices are so off. Not for this issue, but in general. They give you a good idea of what to expect. 9 times out of 10 I see coins priced very close to the prices in the book.
Its the age old question - are value guide prices proscriptive or descriptive? Do you pay high prices because the guide says they are high, or are guide prices high because you pay high prices? If someone changes all the guide prices, would that now be the price you pay?
