So on my 1840 Half dollar there was a bunch of gunk on the reverse wing. I soaked it in acetone to try and remove it but it didn't work. Got my coins back from NGC and they removed the gunk.

    Is that normal?

Should have paid for the variety as NGC only has two certified examples but I was already in for $400 on grading and shipping.

It was awesome they did it. I wanted it removed but wasn't about to mess with it. I just didn't know if this was normal or just because this area on the coin is a marker for wear.

    I'm not complaining

Nice looking coin. You can always send it back in for the variety later.
