I'm not sure if this has been covered before so apologies in advance if it has. I read recently, I think an article by Dave Harper in Numismatic News that this is actually being tossed around by the 4 TPG's? If things were not bad enough for us old timers trying to keep up, imagine how tough it would be for newbies. Perhaps some thoughts on this?
That's OK. The current Sheldon scale as used isn't "a Sheldon anything" either. The original Sheldon scale applied to large cents only and tried to price them on a lineal scale, for example an F-12 coin was worth 12X a basal state example while a VF-20 example was worth 20X. The scale actually worked fairly well at the time it originated when properly applied.
I suggest we grade coins based on decimal point scale. Why not a MS-69.5 silver eagle? After all, not all MS69 are the same, some are better than others.
No it just goes dormant and then pops back up again every so often. Most likely it will eventually happen someday.
Also what about the new grading system already in use. Take for instance a MS65 CAC Morgan. This coin is not good enough for it to be MS65+ but just a solid to high grade MS65. Some dealers also use an additional grade of PQ, PQ+, PQ++ and PQ+++. Just what does that mean? Now I find it has been expanded to PQ++! or even PQ++!!. So the !! is a better grade than !, but not better than PQ++. I saw a MS65 CAC Morgan listed with an additional grade of PQ++!! Come on!
