I know pic's are not great, I'm in a hurry, apologies. I will take more after work if needed. Re-punched mint mark??
These are the CONECA RPM master listing for the 1971 D Kennedy RPM-001 D/D West RPM-002 D/D South RPM-003 D/D Tilted Yours I believe yours looks D/D North.. New RPM? But wait for others to give their thoughts. By the way my favorite year 1971 was my birth year!
All I see is machine doubling. Note the 7 below the mint mark. You can see the same doubling on the cross bar. If it were a RPM, it would have been a south, not a north. The RPM direction is below the main mint mark location.
OK now I understand. Thanks for the info. Maybe RPM-002 South. I'm not saying you are wrong but maybe the lighting of the coin makes it look like MD?
Well I also see the same thing on the inside of the 9 as well. As well as the "D" in GOD and maybe on the "E" in WE.
Can a RPM and MD ever happen at the same time? That would be some serious Machine Doubling on the Mint Mark
Pretty much the machine doubling (damage) creates the problem. If they are in the same direction, that is what caused the mint mark and other devices to be affected. I've never see it not be the case. I've seen machine doubling on a doubled die, but not on a RPM. Note the top of the mint mark? It is thinner in that direction because of the MD.
The 6th picture shows the overall size of the mint mark as being normal with the lower loop reduced from MD. (coin damaged by the machine) If it were a RPM there would be an interior mark in the center. I'm not seeing this on this coin. There is no evidence on your coin. Sorry
Here is a photo of the 50c 71D RPM-002 South. I agree with coop...your mint mark looks like MDD not an RPM. Larry Nienaber
I agree with Larry. I do not understand why the OP has not provided images that highlight the area in question. Lots and lots of photographs that leave the area in question in a "shadow".
