Here's a section that will be of interest to Vito.It is about the coins of Slovenia, which have been issued since 1990. If you have anything to contribute, please do go right ahead & post. Aidan.
Don't think there are any Slovenian coins dated 1990. Slovenia became independent in 1991, and introduced the tolar (SIT) in Oct'91. The SIT circulation coins are dated 1992-2006. Christian
Yes, before the country's independence they had the Yugoslavian dinar, then the tolar for about 15 years, and now the euro. Interesting, by the way, that most of the tolar cash was paper money - the coins had relatively little value. The largest SIT circulation coin (50 tolarjev) was worth about €0.21 or $0.28 ... Christian
Antidote, thanks for posting that. Christian, there are some coins listed in the Token section in the back of the Slovenian chapter of Krause. Aidan.
Right, but it seems those were private issues and not actually used in the country. The date "1990" was even before Slovenia became independent. The Schön catalog says the vinar and lipa pieces (1990-92) were private fantasy issues. Did not want to focus on the euro pieces too much, by the way, since we already have some discussions about them here ... "Slovenian Euro coins." http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=21836 "Slovenia Euros Arrived Today-Pics!" http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=22224 ... but it is interesting to see, for example, that the stork from the 20 tolarjev coin can now be found on the 1 cent coin. And the horse (10 tolarjev) sort of made it onto the 20 cent coins that show two Lipica horses. Other depictions were taken from the tolar notes to the euro coins, such as the Triglav mountain, Primoz Trubar and France Preseren. Or, Joze Plecnik was featured on one of the notes ... and now his (never built) Parliament is on the 10 ct coin. Christian
The first known slovenian coins were issued in 1992 The first coins were odd denominations, such as 002 http://members.tripod.com/~GILAD_ZUCKERMAN/matauang_tanpa_harga.html#SLOVENIA
There were a few pieces issued by the Slovenian independence movement in 1990,as it was proparing for the secession of Slovenia from Yugoslavia. Aidan.
Well, there have been numerous fantasy issues made on behalf, or supposedly on behalf, some independence movements around the world - see Sahrawi "coins" or those "from" Kurdistan for example. So I am always very cautious when it comes to pieces advertised as test coins, preparation coins and such. Stuff like that is usually non-circulating non-legal tender. Christian
Here's an article on the Slovenian Euro coins; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slovenian_euro_coins . Aidan.
