Hi coinfriends, I think these coins are struck, but you dont see same edge. as on a Hadrian Denarius. also no plitt edges. can anyone tell more about this? KINGS of MACEDONIA. Horned head of Pan left, lagobolon behind, in the center of a Macedonian shield Rev. ANTIGONOU left, BASILEWS right Athena Alkidemos advancing left; crested Macedonian helmet to inner left, TI to inner right. 16.75 gr 31mm 5h
The only thing I can tell Oki, is that ever since Steve got his a couple of years ago, I have wanted one. Yours is a beautiful example.
The obverse die is cup shaped and more than usual care was made to strike these carefully and on center. Yours is a mite off center leaving a rim at the bottom. Another issue using this technique was the common Macedon under Rome that several of us have. I have no explanation why this technique did not catch on widely other than it was too much work????
hmm interesting Doug, at 1 o'clock its thick and 7 o'clock thin. maybe that was the trick cupshape so its well centered
Great addition, Oki ... yummy-yummy, my friend (yah, I love the symmetry of these babies!!) => I definitely want to score the coin-type that Doug posted (I've bid on them a lot of times, but have never sealed the deal!!)
An exceptional coin both for its construction and for it condition. Who doesn't love Macedonian Tetradrachms? T
I totally agree, "welcome Goodies" Curious though? ... you've been a member for 6 years, yet this is only your 2nd post!! =>wow Oki, you should feel very privileged!! (apparently, your coin really does "rock") I hope that both of your days are going well (cheers)
All wonderful examples...and I'm currently trying to nail one down myself---but I keep getting outbid
