value, scarceity, what do i do with em now? morgans hello all i recently aquired some coins and would like some opinions on them and what steps i might take to preserve them if they're worth preserveing. and also opinions on getting the coins 'graded'. the morgans in the plastic case are 1879 and 1882
Welcome!! I've seen those Gates rewards before and they are quite collectable. Just leave them where they are and enjoy. If you want to sell them, sell them as they are.
thanks for the welcome. would anyone here have any guesstimate on value? I found this post on a similar set offered from gates company. http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=3566&highlight=morgan Some great info but no price range. is it possible to guess the grade of the coins from the pics? is ebay the best place to try and sell them? thanks for your time
Your pics are good enough for me to see that the Morgans in the top holder are probably cleaned. I would throw them up on Ebay with a 99c start and I think you will do just fine. Let the people on Ebay grade them for themselves. :thumb:
But also be sure to let us know if you do put them on ebay so we can support you....our new member! And Welcome!!
Just looking at the pics, as said before the Morgans in the first pic are cleaned and in the second all 5 dollars are fairly worn...but its hard to tell how much. I'd say they are probably worth melt value...maybe a little more as I can't see the dates on a couple of them. I highly doubt any of them are rare. So, Morgan and Peace Dollar contain 0.773oz of silver. With the current price of silver (about $13.60 per oz), each silver dollar would be worth about $10.50 each. The Kennedy Half Dollars are of the 40% silver variety because they are each late 1960s...they contain 0.1479oz of silver each but appear to be in fairly nice shape and I don't see any obvious cleaning signs...so I'd say they are uncirculated (but I could be wrong). I'd say they are worth $3 each or so (they contain about $2 worth of silver). That token in the top picture...I have no idea what it is...but it doesn't appear to be silver from the color (and probably doesn't have much value). So, I'd say the whole thing is worth close to $80 assuming the dollars are worth melt only. Again, I can't say you'd get this much for them...thats probably what a dealer could sell them for (or at least would try and sell them for).
Did these come from a family member? If so, I'd just keep them as is as a rememberance. If not, I'd still be inclined to leave the sets intact. There don't appear to be any extremely valuable individual coins, but the sets might be worth some money for what they represent.
i picked them up at a garage sale , thought i had found a treasure. thanks all for the replies. so if the morgans in the first pic are cleaned then the kennedys are as well?
Welcome! Hope you enjoy it here! The Kennedy half doesn't look cleaned to me, but I'm not good at determining that. Still, a pretty nice set of coins. If you do not mind me asking, how much did you pay for the lot? Phoenix
That is a good idea but please remember the rules---only members with 10+ posts may post links to their own items----and then only in the Open or Auction Forum. Speedy
