Seems like TPG's give MS grades to coins with slight wear, cabinet friction, whatever you want to call it, as long as they have eye appeal. Here's one of mine going to PCGS next week. I think it's an AU58 but may get a MS61 due to eye appeal and retained luster. What do you guys and gals think?
Generally, I agree with you regarding the grades they assign to borderline coins, but in this particular case I think AU58.
What's up with the obv central device CBD ? It looks like was sandblasted or acid etched or something.
@C-B-D I don't know. I don't collect this series, but the obverse looks in bad shape to me. The central device looks very rough. It wouldn't surprise me if PCGS gave it a "Genuine" slab. Please post the results when you get it back. I'd love to know. Chris
Yeah, I'm not sure. It's a little weakly struck on there but has some circulation roughness of some sort. I don't think it was acid treated. It is weird how that "graininess" isn't in the fields around Liberty. Could it be die erosion or something?
I noticed that too, but I have seen cleaned EF-40 commem halves in NGC 62 holders, so I doubt that this would have a problem with an MS grade. It was probably cyanided at some point.
I say most 58s deserve the 58 due ti what I call circulation hits on the field and devices . Here's an example of a 58 that deserves the 58 grade even with great luster and minimal wear. Image View: Normal | Medium | Large
Lol, I didn't buy them, they were ugly hairlined problem coins! Sorry, I saw them in a coin store. I'll see if I can find one on the internet.
