I came across what almost appears to be a 1788 George III Guinea, but it doesn't quite measure up. It's 20mm across, and it weighs ~2grams (my scale is always floating by a tenth or so). It's gold in color, but dirty and could be closer to bronze or copper. I know the Guinea is supposed to be 22kt which would lead me to believe this isn't one. But it could be? I hesitate to clean it. Any ideas?
Its an imitation spade guinea or half guinea made of brass used as a gaming token. Search George III Gaming Tokens. also see the link. http://www.tokensociety.org.uk/topics/imitation-g.shtml
I have had this similar brass token since the 1960's: Great Britain George III Spade Guinea Gaming Token - Rex Tenby 1790 Obverse: George III facing right / GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA Reverse: Spade Guinea design / JR.ET.JW.REX.F.D.TENBY.ST.C.M.S.P.ET.C / 1790 Brass, 25mm, 3.17gm The "JR.ET.JW.REX.F.D.TENBY.ST.C.M.S.P.ET.C" means: Joseph Rollason and John Wood, Rex, Fidei Defensor, Tenby Street (Birmingham), Chain Makers, Stampers, Piercers, Etc. which makes this an advertising token also.
