I bought this coin in a large group of world stuff and i have absolutely no idea what it is... It's about the size of a US Half Dollar... I'm guessing it's German or Austrian maybe?? HELP!?!?!
Medievel brothel token? You got me on this one, but it's really cool! My guess is it's some kind of health Jeton!!
Hello Matt, As you know, I can answer any question. Sometimes the answer is "I don't know". It has some characters that are not used on German & Austrian coins. I'll be interested to learn what it is. Although I can't be much help, is it made of silver or some base metal? I agree with fretboard that it looks like a token or Jeton. Perhaps it is a temple token.
This is a counter token, called a Venus token or Venus jeton. They came originally from the Netherlands, but were copied and made in big quantities by the counter token manufacturers of Nurenberg. On this site you an find more information about Nuremberger counter tokens: http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/pages/nuremberg-jetons.html There's also this site: http://rechenpfennig.webs.com/ The owner is an expert of counter tokens, who made a scription about Venus counters.
This is correct. If you want to look it up, check out: M. Mitchiner. Jetons, Medalets & Tokens. 3 vols. 1988-1998. I think these are in volume 1.
Now there is a book about Venusjetons with a catalogue of 235 pieces. http://rechenpfennig.webs.com/newnieuwneunouveau.htm your piece is FG 105b
WOW...I did not know that there is an entire book about Venusjetons. Hmm you learn something new every day.
