Hey everyone, Just found a pretty neat ancient coin in my collection the other day and was just wondering if anyone can identify it. I have no clue what it is or where to even start, this area of expertise is far from what I usually am looking in. Thanks!
And on a second thought, I don't think this is "ancient" since the cross on the reverse, as I told another friend of mine, reminds me of what was used for British shillings?
it's not a bit like british shillings............apart from the one in my avatar shillings have always had the head of the monarch (and oliver cromwell) on the obverse, it looks like copper or bronze from the photograph and the earliest regal copper coinage from britain were the james I farthings and it isn't one of those either. i have a distinct feeling that it could be a greman states coin.
Its a rechenpfennig, a jeton from 15th-16th century Germany. Of the more common type. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeton
Maybe $10. Not too much, for a plain one like this. Others, naming individuals and giving the date and place they were made, go for more. In retrospect, this none is more likely French.
