A new coin showed up today, one that might have been seen before, i asked about this coin after it had been posted a while back and was told it was going on ebay , which i tracked it down and slid in a last second bid and won, sorry Matt. I don't ebay, so i used my son's. Diocletain...299-303 AD.. AE Follis. Obv. laureate head right. Rev. Carthage standing front looking left, holding fruits in both hands. A in Ex. 27mmx 11.06g. Wildwinds has two types ( large head which i belive this is and a small head) This is way better in hand..one of the nicest i own now.. I will be bidding on more Ancients on ebay so watch out!! please post some Carthage coins at will.
aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh i bid on that one also! lol! i actually was the high bidder for a while...you dirty rats! just kidding ....i put in a weak bid, if i know you were going for it i would have stayed out all together. but it is a great coin, i absolutely love the color and detail...plus carthage mint is super cool. congrats to you ENG..it has a good home.
Very, very nice big John. I guess I'll have to watch out for you over on the Bay. BTW, I have a similar Constantius I with this reverse, but not nearly as nice CONSTANTIUS I AE Follis OBVERSE: CONSTANTIVS NOB CAES, laureate head right (large head type) REVERSE: SALVIS AVGG ET CAESS FEL KART, Carthago standing facing, head left, in long robe, holding fruits in both hands. Mintmark Gamma Struck at Carthage 298-299 AD 7.41g, 28mm RIC VI 32a
you got it for a great price ENG, i thought it would go for much higher. i'm surprised i was the brides maid even for the low amount i bid. i'm surprised that's your first ebay coin as well ENG. hey, do i get a consolation prize for coming in second place? i have an pretty horrible constantius chlorus..i'm not even going to post it.
Wow, Eng, beautiful coin! Also wow that it's your first ancient from the 'bay. I really need one with this reverse as well, and I hope it'll be like yours. My Tetrarchic follis from Carthage is a Maxentius. MAXENTIUS AE Follis 10.27g, 27.9mm Carthage mint, 2nd officina, early 307 AD RIC 57; Failmezgar 123 O: IMP MAXENTIVS PF AVG, laureate head right. R: CONSERVATOR AFRICAE SVAE, SE-F in field, Africa standing left, wearing elephant skin headdress and holding signum and tusk, at feet to left a lion with captured bull, B in exergue.
Nice stuff. Ive been eyeing this era more as of late. Got some new Licinii on the way, just the AE3s though.
Great pick-up, John. I ALMOST bought that coin - it's a splendid example of the Carthage types. But I had too many other acquisitions in the pipe - sadly, you can't buy every coin you like. I'm glad you got it!
