The portrait on this Roman bronze coin represents clearly a charming woman. It's the first time I encounter this face , though I collected many Roman coins related to Empresses. I can read TINIA over the head of the Empress, Also AUGGG and many other letters as you can see. I shall clean it soon. But first , your opinion dear Masters and friends is to be considered. The coin weighs 2.26 g. Thanks a lot..
Considering that Valentinian II was four years old when first proclaimed Augustus, you might be forgiven the error. Coins of his with the obverse legend unbroken are from the earlier part of his reign and this type is attributed to him between about 8 and 12 years old (379-383). Toward the end of his 21 years when the legend split showed him to be a senior ruler, he was less 'cute'.
It's a nice, youthful portrait, full legends and well-struck reverse. A very nice coin all around. Don't clean it too much, but just a little sand can come off the high points of the devices and letters.
I love when you find a late roman with such great detail remaining...their usual rough shape sometimes makes you forget that, although their coins did lose some artistic beauty through time, they were still quite attractive.
