I agree with Chris. The bottom looks cleaner and a little nicer, but the top looks more legit. I voted for the top.
Well gosh, I think that I like the 2nd one! Guess that makes me contra everyone else, but I'm OK with that!
Thanks y'all! The thing I'm struggling with is trying to capture luster and depth and have the coin look as close to it does in hand all at the same time. It seems that to show good luster, you have to show surface umperfections. The coin in hand actually looks closer to the bottom one. The imperfections you see in the top pic, are not easily visible when viewing the coin in hand and unmagnified. but I feel like the bottom one doesn't show the depth of the coin, or the luster as well, seems washed out.
#1. It captured the luster better. #2 looked all washed out and you couldn't get a good read on the surfaces.
this is a pic of my set up. The camera is a Cannon SX 510 HS. I've found this set up takes the best pic with all the room lights out, window covered and only the two lamps you see turned on. Depending on the finish of the coin, I move the lamps around to get the best representation of the coin.
I assume that you use the macro setting, but do you use the self-timer as well? Sometimes just touching the shutter causes enough movement for me to not get a picture in focus. Can you post a link for the stand that you are using? It looks pretty sweet.
