Hi I have this old wheat coin that has a strange glob covering We. Is it something I should just rid of the coin. Help.......................lol
Leave it soaking in acetone (nail polish remover, I use Walmart / dollar tree brand which has NO ADDITIVES) Nah, if you ask me, I think all wheat cents are keepers. I have truly mangled wheat cents that are much worse than this.
Acetone soak, as Evan mentioned, but be aware, most nail polish removers (all in my opinion) have additives, which can cause damage to the coin. Whatever it is, it is PMD, so keep it if you like, but NAV.
Does it look copper? Part of the coin? If so then it could be a retained interior die break. We could use better photos if that is the case.
We humans produce acetone in the liver in small amounts, but diabetics that are under medicated , the level may be easily detected in their breath. Acetone does not alter the metals that coins are produced from. Yes one study out of a huge number did say copper could be affected, but IMO, it was "for the money ".
Thanks I did not think so for some reason I try to keep all my coins wrapped in archival paper until I can view them. Should go ahead and put it in my spender pile?
