Found it metal detecting yesterday. Not as good as the first 1803 I found last fall but still pretty good. What would be a good details grade for this coin, not net grade. Reverse is way better than the Obverse.
Thanks Tinpot, Here is the first 1803 Large Cent I found in the fall. I'm happy add both to my collection.
I'd say AU details. If you could get a little better image of the reverse, I may be able to nail down the Sheldon variety.
I don't have other good photos with me right now so I just made the first one brighter. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if that will help. Edit: I just noticed I have another photo.
Barely has thawed, I still have 6 inches of snow in 60% of the place, one area (where I found the coin) has no snow and the ground is digable due to it getting warm lately. Not found a cellar hole but at some old woods where a farm used to be. Lots of stone walls too. I found it on the side of a small hill along with bunches of square nails. The hill was full of them and they were masking out anything that may be good so that was a problem. My guess is that there was a house or structure of some sort on the hill.
I would say vf+ details. excellent find . Finds like that would make a guy get out the old detector in a hurry.
That is an incredible find! I actually think its closer to AU than VF. There is alot of meat left in the hair. As @Kirkuleez mentioned, if it would be possible to get nice big pics we could probably figure out the Sheldon variety as well. Either way congrats!
