Do you think this 1876 SLQ would grade, and if so what grade would you give it? 1876 SLQ Obv.-crop.jpg 1876 SLQ Rev.jpg

Do the surfaces and toning look like that in hand? How is the luster in hand?

This coin hand is a very nice looking coin nice surfaces. One reason I purchased it was it's eye appeal . The next was the price , I only paid $50 for it. And to be honest when I saw the coin and asked the the price. The dealer quoted me $50 I could not get the money out fast enough .
I only ask as this series is not one I personally know a lot about. As toned coins do sometimes hide issues I wanted to get an unbiased option .
Another reason I purchased was for slot in my type set. All my type coins in the set are xf or better grades.
Most of the coins in my type set are raw like 85% . I prefer raw to graded coins. The coins I buy for the most part have great eye appeal or are a variety .
To be honest I would not have this coin graded. Plastic holders with numbers or stickers do not impress me.
What does is a coin that speaks to me. Be it for eye appeal or a variety . Thanks for your options

I've often said I will not buy a coin that isn't slabbed either by PCGS or NGC.
    Why?
    1. I participate in the NGC Registry Set program so my coins HAVE to be slabbed by one of those two TPG's.
    2. My main set is a Type Set (1793-1964). I don't have the time to become reasonably conversant with each and every issue/design from that time period (somewhere close to 100 different).

Hence I depend on the TPG's for authentication and to a lesser extent "modifications".
I'm confident enough to handle grading.

And Kanga that's fine! It's the way you want to build your collection . I myself would rather have more coins then plastic or stickers . There's no set rules in coin collecting.
It's a hobby that like a lot of other things in life a personal choice.

I tend to agree with Ganga, except when we are talking about an inexpensive coin that appears genuine. (no expert here). For fifty bucks I would have jumped on it too!

To be honest I was like dumb founded! As Ive seen toned coins that were less than this one go for a heck of a lot more.

The coin has the "meat" of a XF45 or even an AU50 piece, but the surfaces look off to me. The coin appears to have lost much of its original luster, and it has an unnatural sheen about it. I might very well feel differently if I saw it in hand. As it stands, my guess is XF or AU details, cleaned. And I came to that opinion based on the sheen and the coloration, which looks consistent with pieces that are cleaned and retoned.

Have to agree with coinchemistry2012 here. Nice coin, AU, but the surfaces have a "cleaned" look to them. BTW, what is MPD?

I agree the surfaces look a bit off, almost like there's some sort of residue. That's why I buy only slabbed coins except for low value pieces. $50 would be a good deal for AU details though, but not for XF details.

In my opinion the coin will get a details grade. With those surfaces, I think the TPG's would find the the toning not market acceptable. May go AU details, but XF would not surprise me.
