I don't see where the conundrum is. Planchet flaw led to post strike lamination. Years of circulation including change jars, sacks, etc. questionable storage environment i.e. in couch cushions and car seat cracks, resulting in the disturbance of the lamination and wear and dirt. It is plain lucky that the lamination is still attached. Cool coin! Nice find!
I dont see a problem with it. Looks like a nice example of a lamination to me. He also posted this coin over at CONECA. I had Mike Ellis, Jason Cuvelier and Ken Potter look at it.. they too think its a nice lamination.
If those guys say it's real, I can't argue. At the same time I don't understand how it could be square. It just seems really strange.
Aren't error coins a little strange by definition? I mean, look at the clam shell error:http://errorcoins.auctivacommerce.c...Mint-Error-Very-Rare-Type-Error-P3032758.aspx Snap that off or fold it over in circulation and it would appear similar albeit from the edge.
Larry, you have seen laminations like this before. Perhaps not folded over, but certainly have seen the laminations that have two parallel lines involved with them. Difference here is that it folded over and was retained causing what looks like a nice square. I bet if he wanted to mess this up he could lift that folded over piece and flop it back over the void. Certainly NOT a good idea though. I am sure it would break at the bend.
