Hey guys, I've been digging around for some Bust half dollars and came across this in an auction. It say's it's an 1819/8 but neglects to mention what appears to be a die clash just below lady liberties ear. It looks very much like the stripes from the shield. Do you think that would pull any premium? Here is a photo.
Interesting. I DO see it as a die clash. But "yea" or "nay", in my experience die clashes are like die cracks. Some people like them; others don't. But they rarely affect a coin's value.
It is a die clash. You have an O-104 (identifiable by the recut 2 star) and an R-1 die marriage. The clash itself doesn't add any value. If it had a number of die cracks on the reverse it would be an O-104a R-6, which would add value, how much I'm not sure. Here's a link for more info...... http://www.maibockaddict.com/1819-o-104-r1-large-9-over-8-capped-bust-half-dollar.shtml
I'm not sure how to do an overlay, but the lines are from the depressed parts of the shield. There is also a clash line on the reverse from the eagles wing toward the banner, which is from the front of the bust. Here's one from Heritage that shows the same clash marks...... http://coins.ha.com/itm/bust-half-d...on-27-133-ngc-census-0-0-/a/1184-8299.s#Photo
Yes, it is a die clash. There are a number of them on Busties, and sometimes used to ID a particular die marriage.
