The griffin is nice enough all by itself, but the field marks both obverse and reverse make this a fantastic pickup.

This thread was about specialties within specialties. How about minor varieties of one type from one emperor from one mint in the Byzantine Series?
Look at the various styles of "B" (for Basil I, Byzantine emperor, 867-886) on "Type 14" cast coins from the Cherson mint (in Crimea, now the city of Sevastopol, at the north end of the Black Sea, recently in Ukraine and more recently annexed by Russia).

You must admit this is an obscure thing to pay attention to.

Still no dog and snake Steve!

This one was a birthday present to myself. It has take about a week to arrive.

As the song goes "I've go the key of the door, I've never been 48 before!". I know it is supposed to be 21 but I can't even remember 21!

I always love when this thread pops up again because it means Martin got another Papius and I get to go through all of them again.

Martin, does that neat coin with its Roman key symbol mean you now need to acquire a Roman key? They really do look like that! Congratulations on finding that symbol.

Worn and porous but I can't seem to afford nice examples....

This time the symbols are whelk shell or conch on the obverse and scallop shell on the reverse.

Conch and scallop duo, eh? ... yup, that's another very cool symbol-combo (congrats)

Wow, I am very jealous of your continually evolving L-Papius Denarius Serratus Collection (please keep 'em coming!!)

... oh, and I know that you're not quite finished yet, my friend!

Yeah, I love these as well, and I'm always on the hunt for one that's affordable. So far, only the one has made into my collection (but I will find more). Love the symbols on this new one Martin.

Fascinating stuff to me---I never realized the limitless varieties one could focus on within Ancients.
