  1. Thanks Mikediamond. Do have any suggestions on where to send it? And an estimated value?

Send it to NGC or PCGS using a reputable coin dealer in your area. The dealer will give you a cost and others more familiar with submitting coins will comment on approximate cost including error attribution, but my guess is about $50 will cover it. It will be well worth the cost as the value after verification will be substantially more than the raw coin. They will validate and encapsulate it as shown in the third post. Nice find!

Value would depend on condition. If it's uncirculated it would be worth probably $300 - $400. If the date was certain and complete, it would be worth more. Since no first-tier grading service would screw up an error this straightforward, you might as well go with one of the less expensive outfits. I don't recommend specific companies as I'm no fan of any of them.

Could take it to Jim's in Madison next time your up that way, If you were going to sell it you could put it in his error auction. Only suggest you deal with Jim as his employees are less than.........well they are his family so I should be nice

Perhaps it's glare in the photos, or just my eyes, but I have my doubts. In areas where the edge of the coin would clearly not be touching the collar (near Jefferson's ponytail, for example) it appears to me that material is raised up at the edge of the coin, which would not be the case if made as speculated.

Is material standing proud of the coin in this area, or is it just glare that makes it appear that way to me?

  8. Are you referring to the partial date?

Does anyone think it could be PMD, like someone clipped the coin with something?
