Galba. I haven't bothered to attribute the coin. It's an As. The dealer tells me it's LIBERTAS PVBLICA. It's definitely a slot filler and I got it for a decent price. Vitellius. Another coin I haven't attributed yet. Same thing here, a slot filler. I have three more coins but I will save those for later.
Any idea how your Vitellius compares with the average workingman's daily wages at the time of issue? A very short reign in A.D. 69...
Thanks. I should have explained a bit better. I was interested to know if many silver coins circulated among the masses, or whether the "poor," so to speak, got by with copper coinage only.
Copper has almost always been for the poor masses, even up to modern times as small change. Lots of silver circulated from decent wages from manual labor and other types of jobs like that. Mostly, silver and gold was issued to soldiers fighting for a particular emperor. In parts of the timeline of the Roman Empire, silver was more common than copper/bronze coinage.
Nice lookin' slot-fillers, Gil-galad ... I don't have either of those rulers "yet" cha-chinnggg!! (what is your Ruler-count up to after adding these babies?) Cheers
Maximinus Fouree Denarius OBV: IMP MAXIMINUS PIV AVG, Laureate, draped & cuirassed bust right. REV: PAX AUGUSTI, Pax standing left, holding branch and sceptre, altar at feet. REF: Pending This coin definitely is a fouree and I got it for this reason. It's my first fouree. I haven't been able to find a reference match yet. Notice the spelling error on the obverse.
sweet addition, Daryl => *rats* ... I don't have a fourree (fouree) yet Hopefully you're having a happy Easter Eve, my coin-homey!! Cheers
Just another day, my coin friend, it's very uneventful right now. Thanks for the comments my friends. Although, there are three more coins to post. You'll see soon. So, keep watching the thread.
Steve: For the fourree worthy of the x6 collection hold off until you find a really special one. There are fourree bull/lion Croesids (I do not have one) from brfore 500 BC. I like fourrees of the edge notched Roman Republicans. Anti counterfeiting measures are not always ahead of the crooks. Facing bust fourrees with the nose peeled through to the copper are nice. Of course you could get a fourree EID MAR but they seem a bit high to me considering. I do not have a Maximinus.
Doug => the nasty ol' goldie-snouted fourree has now risen to the top of my budget-want-list!! Cheers
Nice Vitellius and Galba coins Gil-Galad! Those are both tough coins. Since we're on the topic of fourees, I'll mention that I had to settle for a fouree for my Vitellius. Being a 'glass-half-full-kind-of-guy' though, the way I look at it, is that I killed two birds with one stone; filled a hole for Vitellius for my 12 Caesars collection, and a decent example of a fouree. Vitellius; AD 68 AR Denarius Fouree; Obv: A VITELLIVS GERMAN IMP TR P, laureate head right / Rev: XV VIR SACR FAC Tripod, raven below, dolphin above. (RSC111, BCM39)
