    For the record, my coin photos are taken with an older model Can(n)on. I'm sure Nikons would do just as well but I have had the old thing for years and rarely use one of my more recent models (also both Canons).

    What IS that thing? It's far too ornate for battle. A ceremonial cannon? Or just a sculpture?

    Not too ornate if you are the enemy of the Tsar at whose city it was being aimed. It was fired but it was never used in war. I believe it was the largest cannon of its type brought to you by the same people who gave us the worlds largest bell. They liked to cast bronze.
