I recently purchased a roll of 48-S Jeffersons and found three different S mint marks. One is relatively featureless like the blob S on the 1979 type I Proof set. The other is thin and uniform in thickness from tip to tip with wide fields at the curves. The last has a trumpet serif at the top and a round knob at the bottom and several of these look like they are doubled. Would anyone care to shed some light on these because I can,t find anything on them anywhere.
Could you post some pics? I tried finding some for example in google images, and got some rather dorty pics, far from coin collecting, lol. Phoenix
Hi. The only pictures I have are in the reference books I own. Sorry, I don't have the equipment to reproduce them, and post them here. For reference, I would suggest "Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia of US and Colonial Coins", "The Cherrypickers" Guide To Rare Die Varieties, 4th Edition", and "The Jefferson Nickel RPM Book". A couple of related websites are... http://overdate1.tripod.com/coinvarieties/id13.html and... http://conecaonline.org/content/jeffersonrpms19461984.html#_1948-S
I took a few pics and I,ll try to send them. BOO! My Picture files are too big and I am not allowed to send them!
Hey Daniel5747 , I had this very issue a while back. Here is the thread. Do your mint marks look like these? Michael
