I'm curious as to if anyone out there is a retired roll hunter? Also as to what was the cause for you to retire? Was the hobby becoming too much, you got bored, bank wouldn't order, no silver, etc?

Can you be retired after only a few months? I was getting a box of halves every week, but after my 8th or 9th box with only 1 40% and no 90%, I decided to use my time differently. Just wasn't worth it....

I probably won't retire, but I do take breaks sometimes of a few weeks. You can go through streaks like last week where I found lots of silver dimes, a 1913 Lincoln, and then a 1900 IHC and feel like you are on a winning streak and then get into this week and the best coin I have turned up is a 1920 Buffalo that had been Nic A Dated - so essentially a ruined coin for me.

I haven't done it in about 6 months. Just don't really have the time when the results were not impressive. My wife said they have a few boxes of halves at her bank so I might dabble in those.

The key is to keep switching! I had a penny phase which ended when I found my fist Indianhead, dime phase which ended when I hit my goal of finding a Mercury dime. Now determined to find a barber half!

Fill in the blank: CRHs never die, they just ___________.

Swithching it up is also the name of the game for me. Cents, no Dimes, no halves, no back to quarters, haven't tried nickels in a while...and so on. Keeps the boredom down, and refreshes the memory for each series. It is mostly a mindless activity that is a highly therapeutical stress reliever, and sure beats wasting time watching mind-numbing crap on the tube.

About how many rolls did it take to find both?

I enjoy nickels and I go through rolls to build a complete set of Jefferson Nickels. The bonus is occasional silver.

I don't want to mindlessly go through dimes for silver but finding a Mercury would be worth the quest.

The Bank counting machine died and they will not get it fixed (CHASE). That is the only reason I started an account there but the folks are super and it is now our major bank. We stopped for now. We would get 2-4 boxes of halves from the credit union and search for both silver and 'buy' list coins. Over a 2 year period, we found a 100 Oz of silver and sold an equivalent amount on the buy list. All in all about $3.25 an hour..We needed a break.

I've been out of the game for close to 3 years now. I don't know when I'll get back into it. I've basically stopped coin collecting. I still have my old coins, I just don't add to it anymore. The reason I stopped was that I went to college and I have roommates. I don't feel safe having a thousand dollars in coins sitting out, so until I'm without roommates, I don't foresee me getting back into it. However, I am back on here because I was hoping cointalk had a forum for metal detecting, which is a hobby I'm trying to take up.
