Got a gazillion coins from my grandmother. Here are a few I would like some info about. Can't seem to find any. Hope you guys can help me? I know this is from Sweden, and a common 5 Ore coin. At least I got plenty of them from my grandmother . But this is the only one with a RNS stamped over it. Anybody knows anything about that. Hmm I can find no info about this one. I sure its Portuguese. As far as I can tell is says: JOSEPHUS I D.G REX .D.GUINE on the coat of arms side. 1763 . AFRICA . PORTUGUEZA on the other side. In the center it says MACU (TA) with another coat of arms struck on top of that, partly covering the TA. The coin is a little over 3cm in diameter and heavy. The coin has ‘bump’ in it, but you can’t do that with your fingers. The metal feels very solid, iron or even steel! Had a hard life on its back I guess. This coin is EXTREMLY light and extremely thin! I guess no more than a gram! I can make little out on it. On the back (I guess it is!) it says; V.G.G FRIEDERICH. MARG. Z . BK. ?(I). ?(E) PR(?). I can’t identify at all what is in the middle. On the front (I guess) Some Coat of arms in the middle, with (48) under. M.A.S.K(?).C.W.M.S.C.H.D.N.F.H.M.I(?).N.C along the rim. German maybe?
Answered this somewhere else, but will reply here also. The first one is damaged from someone engraving their initials into it. The second one is listed in Krause under Angola. Depending on the size of the coin, it is either a 1/4 macuta or a 1/2 makuta or a 1 macuta, which would be under the word MACU/TA, (under the shield stamp). The counterstamp doubles the face value of the coin. the 1/2 macuta (on a 1/4 coin) is KM#49, worth $2.00 in G, the 1 macuta (on a 1/2 coin) is KM#50, worth $3.00 in G, the 2 macuta (on a 1 coin) is KM#51, worth $6.00 in G. These coins were designed for use in the Portuguese colony of Guinea, but the majority of them ended up in the larger colony of Angola, and thus are listed as Angolan coins. The third one is still being researched. I am thinking that it may be a billon issue from a German state, but not positive.
It's definitely german in origin. It's a 1/2 groschen (1/48 ein thaler) and judging from the side with the crowned eagle it reads VGG Friedrich Marg. Z BA.... That is, Friedrich, Margrave of Baden.....(Baden Durlach line) perhaps? I can't find a match for it under Baden Durlach however. I also thought it could be one of the Brandenburg lines (ie not Marg. Z BA but rather Marg. Z. BR). It would fit better with coins i see from Brandenburg....but it is nigh on impossible from the scan to make out the coat of arms. That's my best guess. I wouldn't give the coin a value of more than $2 in that condition. It could be worth a good bit more if the pvc poison was removed (making attribution a heck of a lot easier in the process).
Wow.. Thank you all for all that info. Some knowledge people here, I’d say! And thank you kuhli, which I guess is the same person I talking to in another forum? Got this from another forum Which I replied with… Thanks a lot! Now I have looked closer it does indeed say 1744 on the eagle side. It is however under the wings. You can actually see it on the image right here, now that you have said it. The coin is btw about 1.5cm in diameter.
