The most valuable coin ever issued in the Federal Republic of Germany is the Germanisches Museum 5 marks commem (1952) which costs about €1000 (unc) or €4000 (proof). Then there are coins where only certain year/mintmark combinations are worth quite a lot, such as the regular 5 mark coin 1958 J/Hamburg (€4000/€6500). Relatively inexpensive - but then the country is only about 50 years old (founded in 1949). As for older modern pieces, there are a few (mostly gold) coins from the late 1870s which cost "five digit" amounts, such as Baden 10M 1880 (vz/st €60,000) or Saxony-Coburg-Gotha 20 M 1872 (vz-st €45,000). Again, if you collect by type only, you can choose less expensive years instead. And there is the famous Saxony 3M silver "Lutheran Reformation" commem issued in 1917. Pretty rare, costs between 40,000 (vz) and 60,000 (st=unc). Even type collectors may have to skip this one ... Christian
Nice topic. I wonder if other countries are like Germany. Yes, a coin about $40,000 is expensive for people like me. I don't even make that in a year. But, relative to the US coin market, it's not too big. Coin sales don't even get people's attention until they're over the million dollar mark here. I think it's just a wee bit out of control here.
HELLO; I am a Romanian collector of coins and banknotes. The most valuable Romanian coin is the 20 Lei gold coin from 1868, which costs about 5000 EUR in VF condition. The obverse legend is "CAROL I DOMNULU ROMANILORU" which means\ "Karl the first, king of romanians"
Those sound a lot more reasonable than our 1804 dollar. Cost several million for them. Does any of you have the most valuable coin for your country?
Well, I don't think any come close to the 1804 dollar and the 1933 gold coin that sold recently for millions, both US coins.
Well it's not my country - but back in '87 I think it was - a 1000 mohur of Shah Jahangir, minted in Agra in 1613 (210 mm, 11,935.8 grams) and a 100 mohur of Shah Jahan, minted in Lahore in 1639 (95-97mm, 1094.5 grams) were offered for sale. Bidding for the 1000 mohur coin which is unique and the largest gold coin ever minted reached $10,000,000.00. The coin did not sell as the owner did not consider this an high enough bid.
Easy enough - click here 1000 mohur scroll about 3/4 of the way down - Jahangir 1605-1627 AD 1000 Mohur Contrary to what the web site says I believe there is only 1 - not 2.
One of the rarest coin in the Russian numismatic field sold recently is the Constantine ruble (1825). The story behind it was when Constantine suddenly decide to give up his seat to the next Tsar, Nicholai I, which shook St. Petersburg mint die workers as they worked hard to prepare the dies in advance. In total, only 5 such coins were made and the last auction blew over half a million USD. But currently as Russian numismatic field is blowing at some insane rates, I am sure that it might be worth a fair bit more than that as that auction was held almost 3-4 years ago, if I remember right. Some of the rare Russian coins can be seen here: http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/numismatics/russianc/russ.htm Some interesting pieces are also the Ekaterinburg massive copper plates, modelled from the Swedish copper plates. Finally, the most interesting of all is a massive 1 kilo copper ruble coin minted in 1771, nicknamed Seskestrok ruble (don't think I have the spelling right for that), minted as an effort to back up the metal content value. Unfortunately, such coins proved to be too difficult to make and hence cancelled right away after a few tries. Let's not ask price wise - they are definately beyond reach.
I've just found out that the most expensive Spanish coin was sold in an auction in London on July 1999 for ₤200000 (around $350000 or €304000). This particular coin is 20 Excelentes from 1497. Beautiful but it says there are two known. As a side note on the 1933 US double eagle, most of you already know that there were 10 more that came to light in '04 or '05.If the legal matters ever get straightened out and these get sold, they probably won't reach 7.9 million but I wouldn't make any bets.
Im from Canada, but i dont know the most expensive coin but i know a few expensive coins like... 1936 1 cent with a dot - $50,000 1921 50 cents - $13,000 1862 B.C. gold token $10 & 20 -$50,000 As for bills 1866 $50 - $10,000 1911 $500 -$10,000
Vancoin, the $10 & $20 pieces from British Colombia are patterns. What about the Canadian $1,000 banknotes? How much are they worth? Aidan.
